Brief

Create a sheltered outdoor room beside the house without relying on the existing house for support.

Response

We built a freestanding gable structure beside the home rather than relying on the existing house for support. The matte black frame and COLORSTEEL FlaxPod Matte roof give the room a crisp architectural profile, with clear acrylic glazing placed through the roof and gable ends in response to the daylight brief.

Technical details

Structure & finish

The structure combines aluminium and steel framing with a matte black finish. Engineering PS1 was provided for the project, giving the freestanding frame the right structural basis for the site and roof form.

Roof, glazing & ceiling

The gable roof combines corrugated Colorsteel with clear acrylic zones through the roof and gable ends. A cedar tongue-and-groove ceiling lining finishes the solid-roof section with a warm interior character.

Outdoor room details

The new fireplace, deck and lighting complete the space as a room rather than a simple shelter. Electrical lighting was installed by a registered electrician, with feature pendants and downlights creating a warm evening setting.
