Brief

Cover a first-floor deck while preserving the glass balustrade, outlook and natural light.

Response

The roof was set out with a 5 degree fall and a hip-style junction at the outside end, allowing the cover to follow the deck geometry while keeping the perimeter line crisp from below and from the garden. Dark aluminium framing references the house cladding and joinery.

Technical details

Structure & finish

The pergola uses a dark powder-coated aluminium frame with a strong box perimeter. The plan calls up 300 x 50 mm aluminium beams, 100 x 50 mm aluminium rafters and 150 x 150 mm posts, giving the deck cover a clean, deliberate profile.

Roof & glazing

Opal acrylic roofing spans the deck inside the box perimeter. The 5 degree fall establishes the drainage direction, while the hip-style end detail resolves the angled deck geometry.
