The brief

A covered deck at the bach.

The brief began with an existing raised deck beside a bach on the Tāwharanui Peninsula. The new pergola brings cover to the outdoor dining area, with views through the trees towards the water.

Light grey acrylic roofing keeps the sky visible above the deck.

The design

Sky above. Coast beyond.

The aluminium gable extends over the timber deck, with light grey acrylic between the rafters. Its raised centre gives the dining area a sense of height, while the open edges keep the trees and coastal outlook part of the space.

A lowered outdoor blind screens one side of the dining area.

The design

Shelter that adjusts.

A single outdoor blind adds an adjustable screen beside the table. Lowered, it creates a more sheltered edge; raised, it opens the deck back to the view. The remaining sides stay open to the garden and coast.
