The brief
Room to stay outside.
Beside this Glendowie home, a gable roof brings the dining table and outdoor lounge under one cover. Cedar lining gives the space the warmth of a finished room, while acrylic roof strips and open sides keep the sky and coastal outlook in view.
The design
Timber overhead. Daylight at the edges.
Western Red Cedar lines the solid roof sections, with acrylic strips alongside. Recessed lights and ceiling-mounted heaters sit within the gable, bringing the fittings into the finished ceiling.

An easy step from the house.
The gable sits beside the home's wide glazed doors, with room for a dining table and a separate lounge setting. Its dark aluminium frame picks up the lines of the joinery and keeps the connection back to the house clear.

Open to the view. Sheltered when needed.
Lowered blinds create a more enclosed setting for dining and relaxing. Raised, they leave the deck open to the garden and coastal outlook.

Materials, finishes and project scope
Structure and roofing
The aluminium gable combines Grey Friars Coloursteel roof sections with acrylic roof strips and Western Red Cedar lining beneath the solid sections.
Lighting and outdoor blinds
Recessed lights and ceiling-mounted heaters sit within the cedar-lined roof. Outdoor blinds can be lowered around the deck or raised to open the sides towards the garden and outlook.
